Many new business believe having a website will automatically mean instant traffic. This is not the case at all! To increase traffic to your website you require Internet Marketing and SEO (search engine optimisation). In the past, many years ago now, to get ranked on Google all you needed was SEO, today there are too many factors involved to just fall under the SEO umbrella and achieve high website traffic volume.
What Is SEO Today?
SEO stands for search engine optimisation which means optimising certain factors on your website to be optimised for search engines such as Google and Bing. The below factors fall under SEO:
Researching your industries keywords to obtain maximum search engine traffic by ranking for the best keywords. You can use Google Keyword Tool to get estimate monthly search volumes. If you are operating across the UK, meaning you want to rank your keywords in all areas in the UK, this requires a lot more research.
Since the Google Pigeon Update in July 2014, Google now displays local companies based on the location of the searcher. For example:
If a user is based in Derby and searches Google for SEO, Google will display 5-6 SEO companies based in Derby before displaying national companies. If the same user searches for SEO Derby they will see the same list of 5-6 Derby SEO companies followed by more Derby companies. This applies for so many keywords today so its important you focus on researching your local keywords before trying to rank for national keywords. Performing searches yourself on Google will allow you to see which keywords trigger the local Pigeon Update and which keywords don’t.
Implementing your researched keywords in your Meta Title and Meta Description. Do not waste your time with the Meta Keyword tag as Google have not paid any attention to this tag for years and you will only be giving away your keywords to your competitors. Your Meta Tags need to be an advert for your Google listing to attract the searcher to click on your website, at the same time incorporating your keywords. Your keywords need to be inserted strategically to your meta tags without sounding spammy or forced. They need to flow naturally and i would suggest only optimising a maximum of 3 keywords per web page/landing page.
Landing Page Content
Your landing pages are usually your home page, services page and a main category pages which displays all your products and services. The content on all your web pages is vital for the success of high search engine rankings, the more quality content throughout your site means it contributes to higher search engine rankings.
I would suggest having 300 words minimum on each landing page. Your content needs to include the 3 selected keywords you researched, and more importantly, it needs to flow and read naturally. If you force keywords into your content and make it unnatural, you my get penalised by Google.
Keyword density has been dead for years so do not focus on how many times your keywords are repeated or the density they are mentioned. Only focus on writing high quality content with your keywords mentioned once or twice naturally.
Will Just SEO Get Me Ranked?
Unfortunately, no. You also require the Internet Marketing side to increase your rankings which include blogging, inbound links and social media signals. Covering the SEO side of your website correctly is a huge advantage and a great start to running a successful website.
