Content marketing is now the big name in advertising for any industry. The internet has meant that everything is now about clickable headlines and valuable content. From compelling blog posts to viral videos, businesses rely on content to gain customers. Everything needs to be exciting, interesting and shareable. And it has to be attractive to search engines. The growth of content marketing as a practice means that there are hundreds of job opportunities out there. And there’s also space for you to launch your own services. With my background in public relations, I’ve created a guide for anyone who wants to become a content marketing expert.

Consider a Degree

Not everyone wants or needs a degree. In many cases, it’s entirely possible to build yourself a successful career without one. However, I won’t deny that it can give you a headstart in many fields. My time studying for both of my degrees was invaluable to me, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. If you don’t have a college degree of any kind, I would suggest considering one in marketing. It would give you a solid foundation in the principles and knowledge that you need to succeed. But remember, college isn’t going to guarantee you a job. It’s excellent for your education and a great experience. But don’t expect to walk right into a high-flying career when you’re done.

Take a Course

You certainly don’t need a degree to become a content marketer. Anyone can take it upon themselves to be educated on the subject. If you want to train in content marketing, taking a course is one of the best things you can do. It ensures that you learn everything you need to know, without missing anything out. You can do plenty of research on your own, but a tailored course makes sure you cover all the basics and beyond. If you want to train in your own time, a content marketing course online is an excellent option for you. I know how hard it is to find time for anything outside of work, especially when it takes so much brain power. An online course allows you to complete your work whenever and wherever you want. You usually get access for a set number of days so you can finish everything in your own time.

Research Alone

Being taught all the skills and knowledge you need is great, but eventually you have to strike out on your own. You can’t be spoon-fed all the relevant information all the time. You have to have excellent research skills so you can read about all the latest developments. This is one thing that college is good for because you learn how to teach yourself. But you don’t need college to do that. One of the best things you can do is to identify the best websites, blogs, and other materials to follow. Find industry experts who stay ahead of the curve and learn who to listen to.

It’s difficult to survive in any industry if you stay in your own little bubble. If you want to work alone forever, you’ll have to go and man a lighthouse or become a reclusive novelist. Like my field of public relations, content marketing isn’t an area where you can afford to hide away. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to network with other people. I’m a big fan of networking, both online and offline. You can find some great communities online. They all you to connect with content marketers and share tips and advice with them. Offline, there are always exciting events to attend. They can help you grow your knowledge and stay up to date.

Find Opportunities

Of course, putting your skills into practice is always necessary. There’s no use having the theory if you can’t back it up with any experience. You may be starting to flex your skills by running a blog or perhaps producing a video series. But it’s also a good idea to find opportunities to work with others. For example, if you sign up to CopyBlogger’s Authority program, you have chances to write posts for their blog. You can seek out places to have a guest post displayed and look for other ways to get your name out there.

Follow Industry Leaders

Once you have a solid foundation in the knowledge you need for content marketing, it’s not over. Any industry requires you to stay up to date with the latest trends and happenings. Identifying the field’s leading names and resources will help you to do this. You can subscribe to blogs and create alerts and feeds to make sure you get the latest news as soon as possible.

Teach Others

Teaching other people is one of the best ways to learn more for yourself. Explaining a concept to someone new can help you understand it better. And having to teach someone else a topic can make you do more research around it to learn more. One of the best ways to do this is to have a blog or use another form of content, such as videos or infographics. Writing or talking about content marketing will help you get a firmer grasp on its fundamentals. It can assist you whether you’re a beginner, or you’re becoming more advanced.

Begin Your Career

At first, content marketing might be something that you explore in your spare time. You might be interested in learning about it for your current job or to help you grow your business. But if you want to become a real expert, the only thing for it is to dive right in. Become more immersed in the world of content marketing by carving out a career for yourself. Working for an employer first will give you a chance to grow and develop. However, you might also consider becoming self-employed and launching your own service.

Becoming a content marketing expert isn’t something you can achieve overnight. But anyone can do it with enough time and the right resources.
