Summer is here and that means two things: the start of camp and the beginning of the summer movie season. Sure, they both happen in the summer (you might be saying) but what else does Cybercamps and a blockbuster movie have in common? Technology, of course! How do you think all of those cool Hollywood effects are created? With digital animation and computer-generated graphics - that’s how. In honor of the exploding popularity of all entertainment digital, this month’s edition of the Download is dedicated to the topic of digital animation. |

Shrek, Nemo, Buzz Lightyear. These characters have left strong impressions on pop culture, and each one is the result of equal parts imagination and digital animation. But it isn't limited to just lovable characters; entire movies like Sin City and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, are now being "shot" digitally. Soon, it may be hard to find a big Hollywood movie that hasn't been created inside the four walls of a computer. As you take in the new movies this summer, notice how much digital animation is used, and how it has evolved since early efforts like Toy Story. And if you're interested in learning about the technology behind the magic, the following links have tons of great information on how the digital revolution is changing Hollywood. |

There's a new revolution in digital media called Machinima. Is it game? Is it a movie? Well not really, though it borrows elements from both. Machinima, which is short for machine animation or machine cinema, uses popular game engines to create short digital films. It's the newest hybrid between games and film that is capturing the minds of young gamers and budding filmmakers alike. Games like Halo, Unreal Tournament, The Sims and City of Heroes have all received the Machinima treatment. There are a ton of great places to find Machinima shorts, some of which we've listed here. Check out this amazing new brand of digital entertainment. |
