Hot Items For Holiday 2006

The holiday season is around the corner and shopping is on the to-do list. Game consoles and video games are sure to show up on many wish lists. This issue of The Download takes a closer look at three popular game consoles – Playstation 3, Wii, and the Xbox 360.

On November 19th, Nintendo will be launching the Wii (pronounced “we”) console for the holiday season. The Wii is touted as being the most interactive console on the market. Its special feature consists of motion-simulated controllers. Playing a tennis video game? You could ‘swing’ the controller as if it were a tennis racket. Playing a bowling video game? You could hold

and throw the bowling ball as if you were at the lanes. The Wii has several other cool features. You can download and play all of your previous Nintendo games as well as enjoying any newer games you purchase. The Wii is also backwards compatible with GameCube games; GameCube discs can be placed directly in to the console allowing for immediate play. The Wii is competitively priced at approximately $250.

The gaming community awaits the arrival of Sony’s Playstation 3 (PS3) scheduled to hit the streets this November 17th. Since the initial launch of Playstation in 1995, Sony has been the market leader in video game consoles. PS3 is intended to take gamers to the next level with the latest device – the Blu-Ray player. Blu-Ray is a new media device that enhances HDTV systems and makes the graphics more realistic thus creating a richer gaming experience. PS3 has a suggested retail price of approximately $600.

Since last fall, Microsoft has held solid market share with the launch of Xbox 360. Microsoft has complemented console sales by building a substantial library of games high in graphic richness.

Compatibility has also been a highlight as original Xbox games can be played on the Xbox 360. Perhaps the most unique factor contributing to market share is the online community, Xbox Live 360. The opportunity to game online with peers has been a great draw. The interface is known for being easy to use so gaming with others has been both user-friendly and fun. The Xbox 360 has an average market price of $400.
