We all use the internet, most likely on a daily basis. Our children are using it more and more too, at school and home. They are quite the tech-generation and quite often seem to know more about it than we do. So we as parents need to stay on top of it all and make sure that we know enough to keep them safe online. We need to know enough so that we can keep ourselves safe online too. Sadly, there are scams and grooming taking place everywhere. Here are some top tips to help you to stay safe online.
Install the Right Software
When you are online, you want your internet experience to be a good one. If your computer gets hacked, then all sorts of information about you can be taken. It also slows down your internet experience. So if you notice that your internet is slowing down, it could because it has been hacked. So the first step is to make sure that you have one of the top high-speed Internet service providers in the USA. This will help you to notice a difference in upload and download speed. The second step is to make sure that you have an anti-virus software installed on your computer. It will cost a little, but it outweighs the issues that you might get if you were to be hacked.
It is a much better idea to use nicknames online that your real name. If you use a site like Twitter, then always use a nickname. Something like ‘SarahJones1986’ gives away your full name, as well as your year of birth. Something to be completely avoided. This should be a consideration when setting up personal email addresses too. Making our children aware of this is so important too.

Delete Old Accounts
If you have created new social media accounts, make sure that you delete the old ones. You don’t want to leave any information having around that doesn’t need to be. You might have given someone your phone number via Facebook several years ago and then forgotten about it. If you still have the same number, and the profile is still active, someone could find that number.
